Sliding Troubles

"I'm not sure Q-Ball. It looks like a Hamburger but it sure doesn't taste like one." Rembrandt Brown said.

"I agree, this is not food. This is torture." Arturo chimed in.

Quinn and Wade glanced at each other and smiled.

"You were given a choice." Wade said "You two decided to eat on this world instead of waiting for the next."

Rembrandt took another bite of his burger and choked it down. "Well whatever it is, I paid for it and I'm gonna finish it. How much longer till we slide?"

Quinn looked to the timer. "Fifteen minutes and change."

"I suppose it is our fault that we ate on a world where Cows are an endangered species." Arturo said. "I have a feeling I know why I'm not a vegetarian."

The four Sliders shared in a laugh.

Quinn stood "Well it's time to go."

The rest of the travelers stood up and followed Quinn into a back alley where he activated the portal. One by one they jumped to another world.

A woman walking by saw the vortex and ran to it. "What on earth?" As the vortex started to close, she was pulled into it along with the strangers.

As the woman exited the gateway, she saw that the four people she had followed were nowhere to be found. As she turned around, the vortex closed. "What in the hell?" She asked.

"Stop right there miss." A voice said from behind.

The woman turned to see a police officer with his weapon raised.

"It's past curfew. What are you doing out?" The officer asked.

"I... I..." She said.

"What's your name?"

"Alice."

The officer walked up to Alice and pulled out a device. He proceeded to scan her thumbprint. "Alice Thornberg. Age 27." He said. "Again, what are you doing out past curfew?"

"Could you tell me where I am?" Alice asked.

The officer shook his head. "We know how to deal with you. Come with me." He escorted her to a squad car and placed her in the back seat. Hopping in the front, the officer turned on the sirens and drove off.

The vortex opened a second time depositing the sliders out onto an empty street.

"That was..." Quinn started.

"Strange." Wade finished. "I could have sworn I saw someone in front of us.

"Me too." Remmy said.

Professor Arturo looked around. "Well I don't see anyone else here. Perhaps you were just imagining it. I'm hungry, anyone else want to grab something to eat?"

Wade smiled. "Hungry again Professor? Why am I not surprised."

They made their way towards a hamburger stand. Arturo pulled out money and went to order. "I'll have a Triple Burger with extra cheese."

The man at the stand looked at Arturo. "Please provide your operating license."

Arturo sighed. "I don't have an operating license, I just want a hamburger."

"If you want one this late, you better produce your official operating license." The burger vendor said "You can't just be forgetting that while you're on duty sir."

"On duty?" Arturo asked, "I think you're confuzed."

The man leaned over "You're not cops? Well then, you best be getting home, it's past curfew. I am only allowed to serve food to police officers after curfew."

Quinn looked to Arturo, "Let's go Professor. We'll get some food at the hotel."

Arturo nodded. They continued on their way to the Dominion Hotel.

At the police station, Alice was going through the booking process. "Why can't you just let me go?" She asked. "When did this all happen?"

The police officer taking her prints looked up. "When did what happen?"

"All of this?" Alice responded throwing her free hand up. "There's no curfew in San Fran. I'm old enough to be out if there were one!" She placed hr hand on her hip.

"Other hand please." The officer said. He proceeded to to her other hand. "Lady, I don't know what you're talking about. These lawas have been on the books for years." He paused "You know it amazes me. What harm would it do for you to just be in on time hmmm?"

After a few more minutes he was done. "Alright go have a seat over there."

Alice did as she was told.

Before long a man sat down next to her. "Sheesh, can you believe this?" He said. "I was almost home and they took me in." Looking at Alice he smiled. "Of course it could be worse, I mean I could be home all alone. At least I get to spend it here with you."

Alice smiled, mostly to be polite. "Curfew volation huh?"

He nodded. "Yeah. That's the last time I go get food for the wife." Shaking his head he smiled. "She's pregnant see, and she just had to have pickles and milk. Would you believe it? We were out of milk."

Alice laughed. "Oh hell, I went through some kind of swirly blue thing and ended up here." She said. "Here I thought I had it rough."

The man extended a hand "Name's Malcolm."

Alice shook his hand and introduced herself. "This bites."

Malcolm nodded. "Yep. At least they've changed their ways since the last go around. They used to keep you locked up for a week. Now they just make you wait out the night, Have you watch a video and you're on your way."

Twelve hours later the video was over. Alice exited the police station with Malcolm at her side. "Well it was nice meeting you Malcolm." She said "Have a good one."

Malcolm smiled. "You too."

They departed ways and Alice looked around attempting to figure out what to do next. As she looked over the four strangers that she had followed before were there.

"Hey!" She shouted. Alice ran towards them. "Who are you people?"

Quinn looked to Alice "Um..."

"What was that thing?" She asked. "That blue thing that sucked me in and I ended up here."

The four sliders exchanged glances each wondering how to explain it.

Arturo looked to the timer and then back to Alice. "We don't have time for this." He looked to Alice "Ma'am we're travelers from a different Earth."

Alice put up her hands. "Well this as sure hell isn't my Earth! I want to go home!"

"Don't we all. Don't we all." Rembrandt said as Wade nudged him with her elbow.

Wade walked up to the woman. "We can't go home." She said "We've been trying for years."

Alice looked back in shock. "You mean I'm stuck here?"

Quinn nodded. "Unfortunatly yes."

"I see." She said.

Quinn looked to Arturo "Great, now what do we do. It's our fault that this woman is here."

Arturo nodded. "Indeed."

"Let's take her with us!" Wade said.

Rembrandt shook his head. "Wade, you know we can't do that."

Wade looked back to Remmy. "Someone had to say it! We know you were thinking it!" She paused. "Why can't we take her with us?"

Remmy shrugged. "I don't know! Everytime I suggest it, you all tell me no! So why not be the first."

Wade laughed.

Alice tapped her foot. "Excuse me! I'm standing right here you idiots!" She sighed. "Whatever. You don't want to help me. I'll just figure it out on my own."

As Alice headed out into the street, she didn't see the car come out. It was too late after she was hit and thrown a hundred feet.

Quinn started to run out ater her. Arturo grabbed her arm.

"It's too late." He said pressing the button on the timer. "It's too late."

As the vortex opened and the sliders slid to their next world, the police were getting to the scene to take care of the accident.

Malcolm walked up and saw Alice in the road. "What the?" He ran to her side. "Alice? Alice?"

Alice opened her eyes. "Thank you for talking to me." She said with her last breath.

A police officer walked up to Malcolm "Did you know this woman?"

Malcolm nodded. "Yeah, we spent last night talking. We were both arrested for curfew violation."

The officer made a note. "I see."

"What happened here?" Malcolm asked.

The officer shook his head. "No one's for sure. The driver said she just walked out infront of him. Suicide I would guess."

Malcolm nodded. "Too bad. She was a nice gal."

Seriously Microsoft?

So I went to change my desktop background image from the current windows bleh. To something more cool. You know like Iron Man.

Here's the actual image that I wanted to use. I sized the image and cropped it to what I wanted it to be. Then went looking for the place to do it.

Short and simple? It isn't possible on a Windows Starter OS.

Honestly?

Really?

You serious Microsoft?

I knew there was a reason I liked Linux better. Sheesh.

So, I might actually be throwing this install out the window as well. Might as well stick to Linux for the rest of my life. I already have two computers running it, why not the netbook?

Not a happy camper.

Double Slide

Logan St. Claire exited the vortex from which she was sucked into. "Damn you Mallory!" She fell to the ground as a sharp pain hit her right shoulder. Logan grabbed her shoulder with her left hand. She was bleeding.

Looking to the timer in her hand her pulse quickened. "Only five seconds on this world?"

As the timer hit zero the vortex opened up and sucked her in again. Again she went through and exited landing in almost the exact same spot. "Why didn't I burn up?" She wondered. Looking back at the timer she read the coordinates, it was the same world. She didn't move on to a different world at all. It was the same world.

"I have two days before I slide again. I have two days to figure out how to make this blasted thing not burn me up and not loop around to the same damn world slide after slide."

The pain in her shoulder increased. She had to take care of it. She took a look around. Off in the distance stood the Golden Gate Bridge. "I'm still in San Angeles, at least I'll know where I am." She headed into town.

She hadn't been walking too long before a motor cycle came up. The man riding the bike had blue eyes and blonde hair. "Need a lift?"

Logan, still clutching her arm, looked over "Sure, just take me to the nearest hospital."

"Hop on."

Logan did as invited and they were off.

As they came into town, Logan looked around. Where did all of the cars come from? People weren't riding skateboards or even walking around. Everyone had a car.

They came upon a hospital. "Here ya go." The man said. "Be safe now." He road off.

Logan stumbled into the Emergency Room of San Francisco General Hospital. She was met by a nurse who at one look at Logan got a wheelchair.

"Let's get you taken care of." She wheeled Logan to a bed and started an IV. Inspecting the wound she pulled a bottle out. "I won't lie. This will hurt."

Logan nodded.

The woman poured a blue substance out from the bottle into the wound.

Logan squirrmed and held onto the bed tight. "Ow!"

"Almost done." The woman said. "There we go."

Logan looked down to her shoulder, the wound was gone. The bullet was sitting on top of her shoulder.

"How does that feel?" The nurse asked.

Logan, still in shock, nodded slowly. "How did you do that?" She started to sit up. The bullet rolled down her yellow orange blouse and into her hand. She looked over the bullet in her hand. "Thanks."

The nurse nodded. "You're welcome. I'd like to keep you here for a few days just to make sure you're all healed."

Logan shook her head. "I don't have time for that. I have to get going." She started to get up but was knocked back down on the bed.

"You're in no condition to go anywhere." The nurse said as she laid Logan back down on the bed.

"What did you do to me?" Logan asked as she lost consciousness.

A doctor entered the room. "Everything okay here? I heard you had a gunshot victim."

The nurse nodded. "Evtherything's good now doctor. I used the new formula. Worked like a charm. She's resting now."

"Good, carry on."

A day later, Logan woke up. Looking down at herself, she was dressed in a hospital gown. The IV had been removed. Sitting up in bed, she put her hands to her head. "Talk about a hangover." She said.

Logan looked around the room. It wsa a typical hospital room. Nothing special. Standing up, she walked over to a drawer. Opening the drawer she found it to be empty.

The timer, where was the timer?

Opening another drawer she again found nothing. She moved to a closet and opened it. There were her clothes that she had arrived in. She checked the pockets frantically.

Pulling out the timer, she sighed. "Thought I lost you!" She said to the device. "Don't do that again." She looked to the time left, less than 20 hours.

She searched the rest of the pockets, her gun was missing. "Damn you!"

Logan put her own clothes on and made her way out of the hospital.

As she exited the hospital, Logan looked around. She obviously wasn't home. Whatever Quinn had done to her timer made it so she went someplace else, that much was certain. Logan walked away from the hospital, she needed to find tools. Walking down the street she stopped at a street vendor. Pickingu p a newspaper, Logan read the headlines.

Thousands Die In Rockslide

War On Terror Escalating

President Clinton Exonorated

Logan flipped through the several pages. She had never seen a paper quite this large. "This world would have been perfect to grab resources from." She said. "Maybe it still will be if I ever get back."

As Logan walked around town she was amazed at how foolishly people were wasting resources. Sprinkling systems being left on during the day, cars being left idling while people were in stores. She came upon an electronic store and walked in.

After looking around a bit, Logan found the tools she needed to make modifications to the timer. Walking up to the counter she placed the items down on the counter.

The clerk looked at her. "Woah, I can't have no bomb making purchases going through my store now honey."

Logan rolled her eyes. "I'm not making a bomb you twit." She replied.

The clerk looked at her. "Uh huh. Well whatever you're doing with this stuff... whatever. That'll be fifty three dollars and fourty two cents."

Logan pulled out a small wallet and handed him the money.

"Right, have a nice day."

"Thanks." Logan said. "Hey, any good hotels in the area?"

The man nodded. "Yeah, just up the street. The Dominion."

Logan smiled. "Thank you for your help."

"If you need some company, don't hesitate to ring me." The clerk said handing Logan a card. "I'm always up late."

"I bet you are." She exited the shop putting the business card in a pocket.

The Dominion Hotel was empty. Almost like a ghost town. Logan walked up to the front desk and rang the bell. Leaning against the desk she looked around. A dull room with dull drapes. Dull. Dull. Dull.

"Ah a visitor. How may I help you?" A woman asked.

Logan turned around. "I'd like a room please. 1215 if you have it?"

The woman checked. "I'm sorry, that room is currently occupied. How about one of our suites instead?"

Logan nodded "Whatever fine."

"Here you are, room 107." She handed Logan a key. "Checkout time is noon tomorrow morning."

Logan smiled. "Thank you." Taking the key, she headed upstairs.

Room 107 was a good sized room. As soon as she enterd Logan set her bag from the elecronic shop down on a table in the entry way. Off to the left was a small kitchen, and off to the right was a bedroom. Complete with a king size bed. "This will do." She said.

Sitting down at the table she started working on the timer. Pulling wires here, pushing in chips there. Soldering pieces together. It wasn't the prettiest job but if it did what she needed it to do it wouldn't be that bad.

Ten hours later her changes were complete. She could sleep for six hours and have plenty of time to slide... to wherever the device wanted to send her. At best she hoped she had figured out the burning things to a crisp part. Putting the device back together she flipped on the switch and looked at the time.

"Oh no." Logan let out a gasp. The timer again read five seconds.

04

03

02

01

The timer beeped as the numbers cycled around to zero. "Time's up."

The vortex opened and sucked Logan into it. As she traveled through the orange interdimensional wormhole, she held her breath. In a second or two she would either know if she would survive or burn up on re-entry.

The vortex opened.

Logan was thrown back into the hotel room. She landed with a hard thud on the floor. The timer flew out of her hands and landed next to the wall.

"I'm alive?" Logan said in disbelief.

Standing up, she walked over to the timer and picked it up. It read forty-five minutes. Looking to the table, it was just as it had been.

"I didn't move to a different world." She said. "I really didn't slide."

Logan sat back down at the table and started to work on the device again. She wondered how many more slides she would be through before correcting the problem. Mallory had managed to mess her over good. "Dam kid." She said.

There was a knock at the door.

Logan looked up from her work. Who could be bothering her now? She stood, walked over to the door and opened it.

"Mallory" Logan said as she saw who was on the other side of the door.

Quinn looked at her. "I'm sorry have we met?"

In his hand was a device. It wasn't a timer, it was something else. She took a quick look at the screen. There were what appeard to be spacial coordinates on it. Was he tracking her?

He didn't recognize her though. Possibly a double of the Quinn she had run into? Looking back to him she smiled. "No we haven't. I'm Logan. What can I do for you?"

Quinn smiled. "Are you by chance using Sliding technology? There are some strange spikes coming from this room."

Logan looked over her shoulder to the table. "Yes yes I sure am. Come in."

She moved over to the table and handed him her device. "It keeps opening a portal to this same world and won't let me go anywhere else. I don't get it." She said. "Could you maybe take a look?" She bit her lip flirting with him.

Quinn sat down and worked with Logan's timer. She took the time to rub his shoulders.

A half hour passed. Quinn closed the back of the timer and handed it back to Logan. "That should do it." He said. "Now if you'll excuse me I have a slide to catch."

"Thanks again." Logan said as she showed Quinn the way out. "Stupid doubles."

Her timer beeped, it was time to go. As the vortex opened that familiar orange color showed up. It was time to tell if his changes worked. She jumped into the vortex.

Logan exited the vortex. She was standing in the middle of a forrest. She had made it. But where was she? Was she home? Was she in the same place? She looked at the timer and checked how much time she had left on this world. A week and change. She had time to find out. The good news, she wasn't dead.

Strange Reunions

The vortex opened and deposited Quinn, Wade, and Rembrandt out in the middle of a park.

"Please tell me we're home!" Rembrandt yelled. "Just..." His voice trailed off as he caught a bridge in the distance.

"The Azure Bridge!" Wade said excited. "We are home!"

Quinn smiled, he had finally gotten his group home. Looking at the timer he put it in his pocket. "Finally."

"What ... what do we do?" Wade asked. She walked over to a park bench and sat down.

Quinn followed her and sat down next to her. "Wade, we're home. We look up family."

"Quinn!" A voice came from accross the park. "Wade! Remmy!"

The sliders looked up to see a man shouting at them. He ran over as fast as his legs would carry him. "Is it reall you?"

Quinn and Arturo looked at each other and sighed. "Conrad."

As Conrad Bennish walked up to them he could only smile. "You came back again!"

Quinn smiled. "Yes we're back."

Rembrandt looked at the man, "Do I know you? What do you mean back... again?"

Conrad nodded. "Dude, don't you remember the last time you came back? It was like three years ago man!"

Rembrandt looked at Quinn "We did what now?"

Quinn shrugged. "Conrad, we haven't been home in five years. You've gotta be daydreaming man."

Bennish stroked his beard. "I guess it could have been someone else... with the whole alternate dimensions. Well one thing I'm sure of, Arturo will go nuts when he sees you! Man remember how he didn't believe anything you told him?"

Quinn nodded. "Yeah, I'm sure he was pretty ticked off over the whole thing."

Bennish nodded "Shoot, worse than that man. He claimed that he invented sliding!"

Quinn sat back down on the bench as his jaw dropped. "That bastard."

Bennish dropped his smile "I know dude. It's something else for sure."

Quinn stood up "He still working at the university?"

"I think so."

Wade lookd to Quinn "Quinn, like you said let's go meet up with family first. We can take care of the professor later."

Quinn smiled "You're right." He kissed her on the cheek and said "I'll catch up with you two later. I'll be at my mom's."

Quinn headed towards home, Wade and Rembrandt went their ways as well leaving Conrad Bennish alone in the park.

Quinn knocked on the door to his house. The gate had squeeked like it was meant to. He couldn't quite get why the squeek was necessary. Maybe it was something that was just meant to reassure him. Who knew.

As the door opened, his mother stood before him. "Yes?" She started "Quinn!" Mrs. Mallory hugged her son tight. "Oh Quinn! It's been so long since I last saw you!"

He returned the hug just as tight. "Mom! It's good to see you!"

"Oh Quinn, after you left that second time, I didn't think I'd see you."

Quinn nodded. "You're the second person to have said something like that to me today." He continued to hug her.

"Come in, I'll explain it all to you." She said as they went inside and sat down.

Mrs. Mallory explained the situation with the last group that had visted her home who called themselves Sliders.

"Oh brother." Quinn said. "I go for an adventure, finally make it back and find out all hell has broken loose on my Earth."

"Whatever the case I'm so happy you're home." Mrs. Mallory said.

Wade walked into her apartment. On the desk were letters upon letters, some opened some not. She read through a few of them. They were deals based on book deals and writings from her journal she was keeping about their adventures sliding.

She picked up a phone and called made a call. "Hey Sandra" there was a pause as she waited for the person on the other end to speak, they were shocked to be hearing from her. "Of course it's me silly! Who else would it be?" She paused, "Wait what? Start that over, you have to tell me everything." Wade said as she sat down.

Rembrandt Brown knocked on a door in an older part of town. Nothing fancy or really kept up. He wasn't even sure if there would be a response, but it was a place to start.

"Who's making all that noise?" A voice came from behind the door.

Rembrandt smiled. "Mama, it's me! It's Remmy!"

As the door opened an older woman with gray hair looked out. "Remmy? But you've been gone... for so long."

His smile dropped. "I know mama. I'm home now. I'm home."

"... and that my dear students is why the Earth goes around the Sun." Professor Arturo finished his comments. "Class dismissed."

As the room emptied, Max walked over to his desk and started packing up his briefcase. Arturo was interrupted as a familiar face entered the room. "Ah Mr. Bennish what can I do for you?"

Conrad walked up to his former teacher. "Have you heard man? They're back."

Max kept packing his things. "Who are they?"

Conrad smiled "Who do you think? The Sliders."

Max dropped a paper. It fell to the floor. He looked to Conrad in shock. "What?" Could it be? They had come back for him? "Where are they?"

"Who? The Sliders?"

"Of course you blistering idiot! Who else would I be talking about?!"

Conrad laughed "Dude, you don't have to get so excited over it. They went their ways man. Probably to catch up with family and stuff."

Max thought it through. "Good, their timer hasn't hit zero yet then. They have time." He headed out the door leaving his briefcase behind.

As Max walked across the university campus, he couldn't help but start running. He wondered why they didn't track him down first. That really didn't matter though, what mattered most was they were back.

Before long, Arturo was at the Mallory's door. He knocked on it and waited.

The door opened, it was Mrs. Mallory. "Oh Professor ... Arturo isn't it?"

"Yes ma'am." Arturo said "It's good to see you again."

She looked him up and down remembering the last time she had seen him. He and his double had fought on the front lawn before the Sliders had left for another world.

"Yes of course. What can I do for you?"

"Ah, what indeed." Max said. "I heard that young Quinn was back. I wanted to welcome him home."

Mrs. Mallory hesitated "Do you think that's a good idea? I mean with all that happened three years ago..."

Max rubbed his hands together "Yes the um incident. Oh trust me Mrs. Mallory, time has given me the chance to think things through."

"Please come in. I think Quinn is downstairs in the basement."

Max entered the residence. "Thank you." He headed downstairs.

Sure enough, Quinn was seated at a computer running through calculations.

Arturo walked up to Quinn "You came back for me!"

Quinn turned around "Professor." He said. Quinn turned back around and continued working.

"After all this time, that's the best you can do?" Max asked. "One would think you'd have more to say."

Quinn stopped typing. "What do you want me to say Professor? That I'm happy you took credit for my work?"

Arturo sighed. "What? We've been through this. Three years ago, that was my double from this world!"

Quinn looked up "You're making no sense. You're the only one here."

"I think there's been a miscommunication Quinn." Max went on to explain how he was switched with his double from this world and was left here when they slid. "Don't you remember?"

Quinn shook his head. "Professor, I haven't been here for five years. I don't know what you're talking about."

Max paused as he attempted to put all of the pieces together in his head. "You aren't the Quinn I know... this is in fact your Earth." He sighed. "Dammit. Here I had thought you had come back for me. But in reality you have just come home to your own world."

Quinn caught onto what the man was saying. "I'm sorry Professor, I'm not the Quinn you knew or traveled with. You've been stuck here for three years?"

Max nodded "Yes, and a great deal more I fear."

Quinn looked to his timer on the desk. "I really don't have need for this anymore. I'm home. You could use this to search for your home world."

"I don't even have the coordinates of my Earth Quinn. Bouncing from Earth to Earth just doesn't sound enjoyable anymore."

Quinn nodded. "I understand. It was only by chance that we happened to come back here. We were lucky."

Max sighed "I will take my leave of you now. I have bothered you too much. Good day."

Quinn showed Max to the door. He couldn't imagine just settling down on a strange Earth that wasn't his own. He hoped the Professor would be able to cope.

Max took a look at the Mallory house before heading back to the university. To have come so far and yet so short. He truly was going to spend the rest of his life there on a world that wasn't his.

"Quinn, Wade, Rembrandt... wherever you are. I hope you had a hell of a ride." Arturo said to the wind as it rushed through his hair.

Sliders

Been watching my Sliders DVDs. (I really wish they would put season 5 on DVD). Anywhoo, it has me thinking and wondering. Since there are millions of Earth's out there. Why not just pick one and start writing new stories? Couldn't be that difficult right?

Well that's what I'm thinking at least.

We'll see if it happens or not. Maybe Sliders should just be put to rest. I just can't stop thinking of all the different possibilities that are out there. So many stories that have yet to be told.

Viper On YouTube

Found a place on YouTube where one can watch all of the viper episodes from all four seasons.

Not too bad considering I've not seen them all. I've seen all of season 1, parts of season 2 and the first episode of season 4.

So I'll be sure to be watching these. I hope eventually they'll put all of the episodes on DVD, kinda like they did with Sliders. Actually they didn't put season 5 on Sliders. I'm still waiting for that to come out.

Of course I could use NetFlix but well I don't want to do that. Moslty I don't want to pay monthly to just watch old tv shows. I'd rather buy DVDs.

So yep, I'm watching Viper now.

Love it!

Movie Rentals

Went and picked up three movies to watch. I love RedBox.

The movies I got are:

  • In Time

  • Iron Man 2

We'll see how well I enjoy them. I've heard that Iron Man 2 isn't a great movie and all of that, but well I wanted to see it anyway.

So yep, we'll see how it all turns out.

Life

Yeah, I haven't a clue what I would call today. Rented a truck to get rid of a bunch of branches and leaves from the backyard and all of that.

Wasn't too bad of a day if I do say so myself.

So yep, another successful day in my book. Nothing too crazy happened and life is just good.

Ubuntu 12.04

Came home and installed version 12.04 of Ubuntu. It went very quick. I rather enjoyed the process. Didn't have any issues with the wireless or anything else. So yes so far smooth sailing. So very happy this went quick and painless.

Wireless Networking Ubuntu 12.04

Yup, I upgraded to Ubuntu Unity 12.04. Wireless networking isn't working quite yet. Not sure what's going on. I followed the same steps I have had to with the machine in the past and still nothing. We'll see what happens. But for now, it appears that it just doesn't like me. I'll have to do some more searching in order to find the best answer to fix this problem. But for now, I'll have to keep it wired.

ColdFusion

So recently, I decided to include ColdFusion in my Linux setup. I was going to just run Tomcat and install CF that way, but well I decided against that route and installed ColdFusion 9 using the regular methods. It's been running quite smoothly if I do say so myself.

I of course don't have the installation instructions anymore. Oops. I suppose I could Google for them again and make a copy or something. But well if my server ever crashes and I have to start all over again, yeah I'll worry aobut it then. FOr now, not so much.

So here's my current setup:

  • MySQL
  • PHP
  • Perl
  • ColdFusion 9

Yeah something like that. Not too bad if I do say so myself. Of course what else would I say about it? You know I wouldn't ever say anything bad about my own server setup. Well unless I already have, if that's the case. Oops. Disregard that blog post.

So yep, I think I'll have some fun with all of that for sure.

Subversion Your What Now?

Been reading on people adding their home directories to Subversion.

I'm still scratching my head over this one. Currently I zip up the config files that I want to keep backed up and store them on my personal server. I don't quite get why someone would have the need to subversion their home directory for config purposes. Well I take that back, I suppose if someone wanted to distribute their settings out to a ton of people yeah they could do that. For example a .bashrc file that you want all of your students in a class, or all of your coworkers to have the same functions etc. Yeah I could see where that could be useful. But for day to day things? I don't see a need for it.

Of course it could change someday, but for now. Nope.

Oh Weekend We Meet Again

Well the weekend decided to come again. Not sure how I feel about that, well except for the fact that I enjoy the weekends as much as I possibly can.

Dog woke up on his usual time, darn bloody early if you ask me. But he's a dog, he doesn't quite get that it's the weekend and that he's meant to sleep in. Yeah something like that.

The cats on the other hand know that sleeping is good for you. I mean think of how much they tend to sleep all the time? Yep all of that for sure.

So dear weekend, I feel like just hanging out with you and having some fun. Is that to much to ask? Nope didn't think so.

Oh Battlestar

So I decided I should actually watch the rest of Battlestar Galactica. I've seen the first three seasons. So why shouldn't I actually finish it up and watch the fourth season? Yep that's what I'm thinking.

So there's my thoughts on that. Of course I should just watch the series starting from the beginning all over again. Yeah, get recaught up on what the whole show was even about.

Now there's an idea.

Give me some time to save up to download the last season, then if I enjoy it that much I can go and buy the DVDs for the series. Yep all of that.

More Linux

Been playing with the Terminal lately. I've been wondering why I just didn't go with a Terminal only install. Oh that's right, because I want to actually surf the web with all the images and stuff. I'm sure I could have found a way to do that. But yes, I'm still loving having Linux on my home computer. It's just wonderful to be able to pop open a Terminal and do things.

Ran across some YouTube videos lately that's teaching me more about bash scripting. I probably should pick up a book on it, that would be way cool.

One script came in very handy. It gives me the ability to record my screen. I figured it would be way difficult and time consuming. But nope, not with the script. I'll have to post a link to where I got it from later. It just rocks.

So yes, I'm giving Ubuntu Linux version 11.whatever a two thumbs up. I hear there's a version 12 out there in beta land. I've not upgraded yet, still waiting for the OS to tell me it's available and I'll let the sucker upgrade itself. So yep good times for sure.

Linux Life

Oh yes, I did it. I removed the Windows Vista OS from my laptop and installed Linux.

Now I am just happy with what I now have. Oh yes you wouldn't believe it! Free OS, Free software to use as I please. Yep it's the greatest thing to happen to my computer since I bought the sucker. It feels like my computer is running quite faster as well. So I'm happy.

The flavor I decided to go with was Ubuntu.

Backing Up Files

As I was in the process of backing up files last night due to the fact that I was getting rid of Windows Vista (finally). I found out the following:

I managed to backup all of my videos and music just fine. I did not however backup some java projects that I was working on. Bad Kyle! Bad!

Oh well, I guess I'll have to code those over again. This time I'll be sure to check them into my local SVN repo.

Can't believe I didn't do that.

Oh well, once you learn you learn right? That's how it works yes?

Fan Made What Now?

Ran across a fan made Star Trek film today on YouTube.

Yeah I wasn't amused in the least. I don't get why people make such films. Doesn't make any sense at all. Oh well, they can do whatever it is they want. But to be honest, I think Star Trek has seen its days and should just be put to rest.

Yep you heard me, it needs to just go to sleep. Take what it has and run with that.

Time Travel

Ah the matter of Time Travel. It's happened before through various televisions shows and movies, books etc. The whole notion of "What If" I did this instead of that back in the day. By some miracle the character is given the opportunity to travel back in time and correct a mistake they think they can fix.

As most time travel stories go, the character finds out that no matter what they do to change the past they simply screw things up by doing so. They find it's better to have left the past as it is and they go about their way satisifed that they at least tried.

One would think if they had figured out that part to begin with, they would be happy. But no this is never the case.

What is it about the human race that makes us want to fix regrets from our past? Mistakes and whatever else happens in ones life make up who they are today.

If more people could realize that and understand that, would they still want to go back in time and change events? Interesting question. Since everyone is different and have unique experiences to themselves... it's dificult to even come at an answer to that question.

iPad and File Uploads

If you're attempting to upload a file using Safari... don't even try.

Apparently the iPad iPod Touch and iPhone's Safari browser's don't have access to the file system... so anytime you come across a webpage where you can upload a file, it won't let you.

There are "workarounds" which include jailbreaking your iWhateverDevice ... but honestly do people really want to do that to use your website?

Way to go Apple... way to go.

TinyTower Cheating???

Okay seriously?

I went and did a search for "cheating at TinyTower"... sure enough there are cheats for it. They all appear to do with date and time modifications.

My first question is... why? My second question is no really why?

Silly people, why on earth would you want to cheat at a free game? Or cheat at any game? People just don't have patience anymore.

Currently I'm waiting 13 hours for a floor to finish. Yep I'm waiting for it... gasp. Whoever thought of actually waiting for your game to do its thing? If I were to cheat it would take all of the fun out of it. So nope, not gonna cheat.

Happy Easter

Hello Easter Bunneh... you came last night. Woohoo! You um left your carrot behind though. I won't lie. It just kinda happened. Yep all of that.

Tiny Tower

So I started playing a game called Tiny Tower on my Android well and my iPod. It's quite addictive for unknown reasons.

The goal is to build as tall of a tower as you can.

You create different floors that are of different types, residential, food, service etc. and just keep building.

I tend to leave it alone for a few hours and pick it up, the game keeps playing by itself.

So yep, Tiny Tower give it a shot if you haven't yet.

Pepsi Next

So I tried Pepsi Next.

Not too bad if I do say so myself. Actually found the taste to be quite good.

I compared the Nutritional Information on the back of the bottles of Pepsi and Pepsi Next the other night. Pepsi Next did have less sugar in it... but if I'm not mistaken it had more sodium. I'll have to find the exact numbers and post them.

But as far as the taste goes? Very good in my opinion. Quite delicious actually. I'd pick that if they started serving it in fast food joints.

Tomorrow Is Another Day

So the weekend comes to an end. Good things were learned, hopefully remembered over the course of this weekend as General Conference came to a close.

I?m always excited for General Conference. It feels like it just goes too quickly some years. Before long it's over. Good learning experiences were had for sure. I?ll have to download the messages to read over to catch things that I may or may not have missed.

Star Wars :: Special Editions

Wow... can't believe people are all up in arms about this.

So, as we all know, George Lucas made "Special Editions" of the Star Wars movies. Fans of the movies got all upset because he changed things and enhanced the movies from their 1977 looks. They "demand" that he release the original untouched movies in a high def format.

Lucas refuses and tells them to "Grow Up."

Classic.

My question to all those happy Star Wars fans out there? Why don't you just watch your VHS copies that we know you have. Don't say you don't have the originals.... we know you do have access to said originals. Sure they're not in DVD format and stuff, but hey you have access to them.

It's his show. He can do whatever he wants to do with it.

Yep my 2 cents.

I always get a kick of logging into my WordPress and reading through the spam that gets stuck in the thing. Yeah. Oh too funny!

Adobe / Macromedia = Flash

Yeah... let's talk about Flash for a minute shall we?

Dearest Adobe, why does your product choose to update ... what it seems like every 5 minutes. Or every time I turn around? Why?

You can't seriously be adding that many changes to the Flash program installed on my computer... can you? Perhaps I should start following every little release you do to the software so I'll know exactly what it is you're adding to my computer now. Honestly... it's starting to become annoying. Well more than annoying. Sure you want your followers computers to be up to date and everything... and you think that by making them update every so many days will keep them that much safer. Yeah... about that.

There a freakin' way you can just do it in the background? Without bothering me? That would be nice.

Fix something... make it better... make it more seamless. I don't want to even see you that often!

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Hello Tuesday

It's already Tuesday... I'm still wondering where yesterday went to. Or Sunday for that matter. I suppose one could blame Daylight Savings Time and all of that fun mess. But well why go there at all? My thoughts exactly.

In other news... yeah there is no other news. Had you going there for a moment didn't I?

Had some fun times with the hosting company. I swear they're not the brightest people on the planet. I'll have to write about that later.

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

7-Zip

I love 7-Zip. I use it like no other on the command line.

Something occurred to me tonight though. When I backup files... say make a copy over to my DropBox, I just copy them to my Dropbox. I haven't been zipping them up.

Well guess what I started doing? That's right. I started zipping up some projects and copying those over to my DropBox.

Good times for sure.

New iPad

Apple has released their new iPad. yes you heard me right, they released a new iPad.

Now interesting thing that happens whenever they release new things... eventually the newer operating system that will go on the device won't work on version 1 of the iPad. Yeah... same thing happened to my iPod Touch and my Apple Laptop.

So... yeah, I think I'll still wait a while before getting an iPad. Maybe I'll wait till version 4 or 5.

Or just never get one at all. Yep that's also an option.

Oh FaceBook

Back in the day FaceBook was good. Then things just became bleh. Yeah I said it. You remember the days when people would add you left and right. People you hadn't heard from since Jr. High School.

Yep all of that.

Well FaceBook. I'm pretty sure that I'm getting tired of it all. I'm sure there is something more out there than being obsessed over FaceBook. People can't just live life on the internet.

So yeah... there are sure some things to think through over FaceBook for sure.

Hello Weekend

So the weekend is here. A weekend is always a good thing to have around. So many things can happen in a weekend. Currently I'm just reading and catching up on random things.

Oh yes good times indeed.

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Thinking Thoughts Are Thinking

Lots of thoughts in my head tonight. Not sure where half of them are coming from or where they are going.

I suppose everything will work out in the end.

Monday, February 20, 2012

Funny How Fast Things Go

Why yes I am speaking of how quickly the weekend went. Honestly it went by faster than a slug on a turtle. Mind you that's pretty fast... for the slug. The turtle is use to walking that fast.

So yep the weekend is over, back to work and all of that fun stuff.

MySQL Adding Dates

Talk about way easy to add to a date using MySQL. Didn't know it would be this simple:

Let's say you want to add a certain number of years to a date:

DATE_ADD(NOW(), INTERVAL 1 YEAR)

Now, wasn't that easy?

You can do the same thing for days as well. Just change INTERVAL 1 YEAR to INTERVAL 1 DAY

Yep, that's pretty much it.

Happy coding!

Sunday, February 19, 2012

Monday is President's Day

Oh yes, President's Day is on Monday. Which means day off!! I can handle that... oh yes very much so.

Think I'll relax tomorrow... do somethings here and there. But yeah mostly just sit back and relax.

Fun times, good times. Can't wait. Oh that means I can also stay up late tonight... and well into tomorrow morning without having to worry about going into work.

Sounds like a plan to me!

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Soda

What is it about Soda that's so yummy? Probably all the sugar and stuff they put in it.

It's amusing how some people prefer a brand of soda over another... how they can't live without it etc.

Can't say that I'm addicted to a certain brand. If it's soda, I'll probably drink it no matter what.

All the soda.

Monday, February 13, 2012

Silly Polar Bears

Darn Polar Bears were keeping me up last night. Not sure what on earth they were doing... thought they hibernated during this time of year. Guess I was wrong.

All I could hear was a seasaw. Guess the Polar Bears were just not sleepy and wanted to have some fun? Yeah no clue.

I think I'll waddle over to their habitat later on and see what they're up to. We've been neighbors for a while now... and haven't gotten to know them.

Or I'll just go looking for fish. Mmmm fish.

Saturday, February 11, 2012

Oh Weekend

Dear Weekend. You find a way to amuse me. That's why I think you're the best. Well more than that of course. I think I just enjoy sleeping in and watching TV. Yeah something like that. Not quite sure at all... it's all just yeah all of that.

Sweet, I'm starting not to make sense early on in the post... that can't be good.

I started watching Nowhere Man again. I should write blog posts about the episodes. Such a good show that is.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Fade Out and Slide

So I was looking for a way to fade out and slide... I was turned towards animate. But I'm not quite sure that's what I want... its kinda choppy.

Guess I'll continue searching.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

JQuery

Oh JQuery. I've missed working with you. Time to pick the book back up and learn something new. Personally the dialog boxes rocked and all of that... yeah that's the extent of what I know so far.

Thinking.... Thinking ... Thinking

The mind is an interesting piece of equipment. Always working. It keeps you breathing, helps your legs move, your arms etc when you need them to move. It can also be the cause of much heartache and loss. Especially when memories are involved.

Just some random thinking for tonight.

Awake

Oh yes... I'm awake for some reason. Haven't a clue why exactly. Just here I am.

I wonder what tomorrow will bring... hopefully something good.

Form Field Woes

I was working on something today... more of a proof of concept. I had a dynamic form from which the user would fill it out and click submit. They would then see if they filled it out correctly.

Well, I got a little stumped for a second or two regarding it... how would I check if the question was processed. Usually I do:

IsDefined("form.fieldname")

But with my question looking like:

answer_#q.question_id#

I couldn't quite do that. CF kept telling me it hated me. (Honest, those were its exact words.)

So I had to figure something out. At first I thought I'd have to use Evaluate... but well would you know that would be the wrong course of action? Ran across a website that told me to do this:

form["answer_#q.question_id#"]

Would you know that it worked? Oh yes it sure did work. So that made my day.

More WordPress Yeps

Just trying to figure out more things on WordPress... for kicks. Nothing too big... mostly have to do with theme related stuffs.

It's something for sure.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

PS1

Oh the PS1 variable. Good times for customizing your Linux Prompt.

Been attempting to figure out a good Linux Prompt for my computer. Still looking into it... and still trying to figure out exactly what it is I want my prompt to display. If I don't figure that out... well what's the use of having a prompt at all. Yep all of that.

So we'll just have to wait and see what happens with all of that.

Good times head.

Aqua Team Is Back

So... watching The Biggest Loser. The Aqua Team is back. Always difficult for newbies to show up... yeah. Should prove to be amusing to say the least. I'm sure they'll be the first ones picked off, chewed up, and spit back out. So yeah there's that.

The other teams... yeah they're not that happy with them at all. Yeah they don't believe nuffin... sooo classic.

Monday, January 30, 2012

WordPress Modifications

Been working a little with some modifications to make my own WordPress Theme. They say the key thing to remember is not to change any of WPs core code. Write all the plugins you want, write all the themes you want. But don't you dare change the base code.

Just look at the Replicators when SG-1 mucked around with their base code. Yeah remember that?

Well mucking around with WP's base code is similar... well it won't spawn up and come after you. But you get the idea.

First up, I wonder what kind of other post types I can come up with... who knows eventually I might come up with something for this site... yeah we'll have to wait and see about that now won't we.

Sunday, January 29, 2012

Science Fiction

Funny thing about Science Fiction stories / shows / whatevers. The authors can make them believable if they choose. On the other hand they can do whatever they feel like. I suppose that's why it's called fiction. Having the authority to do this that and the other. But please make sure it's a good story... or at least something that will hold your audience's attention. If it doesn't do that, and they leave? Yeah forget it. They won't be coming back.

WordPress Overload

Wow... just took at look at all of the categories and tags etc for this site. I might need/want to rethink most of it. Or at least keep the search active. Yeah that might be the best way to find blog posts at the moment.

On the other hand... I suppose it looks alright. Nothing too crazy. Nothing too bad. Yeah all of that and more.

Still working on the design of the site. Eventually I want to put the site in some kind of full with layout etc. Yeah not sure how that'll end up. We'll just have to wait and see what happens with it all.

Saturday, January 28, 2012

The Outer Limits

Been watching The Outer Limits on Hulu lately. I just love this show. It's rather good.

I should post something about the episodes or something... yeah that would be a fun project for sure. We'll see if I ever do that though. Busy busy me.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

Today

Such an interesting word... "Today". Lots of things happen and lots of things exist simply because of "Today".

Not much to say really... just "Today" was alright.

Yes, that pretty much sums it up.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Install This Install That

I'd say it never ceases to amaze me... perhaps it's more of an amusing type of thing. You're on the internet and go to search for a tutorial on this that or the other. A program is required. The tutorial goes through step by step on installing the needed program. Why is this?

I would think that if the program was written well, it would have an installer that was helpful enough to step you through installing the program. The tutorial you're reading wouldn't have all of the steps to install it... shouldn't it just say "First install this program, now that you have it installed, here's how you use it." Type of thing?

Yeah. That's what always gets me. Perhaps I'm just alone in this thinking... who knows.

Ant - Hello World

Usually you wouldn't ever use a hello world example in Ant. Outputting text isn't really the goal of the thing. But this will give you a chance to see how to run an ant build.

So, open up a text editor and save the following as build.xml.

<project name="HelloWorld">

<target name="sayhello">
<echo>Hello World!</echo>
</target>
</project>

You would then run the program as:

ant sayhello

As you might expect, it simply says Hello World!

Echo messages are useful to track the process of an Ant Task when it's going through specific procedures that you specify.

Monday, January 23, 2012

1 AM

I suppose that means it's time for bed. :-) I guess that's a good thing... maybe. We'll see how well I sleep... if I can sleep at all. Yeah all of that... and then some. We'll figure it all out eventually. Maybe possibly.

If not... well that's just another story to think about... another song to write... something else on the horizon to worry for another day to come. With that I say good night, may sweet dreams meet you with their kindness. May tomorrow morning come in bright and wanting.

Ant For Multiple Deployments

I use Ant a lot when I program. Mostly for deploying whatever I've been coding to a test site. I currently have an ant build file that has two targets. One target will put the files to a tomcat server running ColdFusion 9, the other target will deploy the files to a server running Railo.

Eventually I'd like to have my build file run to all of the possible ColdFusion versions that I can. Now that would be something special.

I should start a section regarding Ant... now that would be something special.

11:26

Who would have known that the night would have progressed so quickly?

I sure wasn't expecting it to be this late already... before long tomorrow will be here and everything else will happen. Work will come and yeah. So I can just look forward to dreamland I suppose. Hopefully I'll have some good dreams tonight. We'll have to see what happens.

For now, I'll just sit here and wait till the night continues and I will be able to go to bed.

Puppy

Gage sure knows when he wants to go for a walk. He's had some fun times today while we were out.

From taking my latest book from the bedroom, to moving things around the house. Oh yes, methinks we need to keep things out of puppy's reach.

Sensual

Looking to her with lust
needing to feel her against me
licking her lips
caressing her body

Kissing her deeply
hearing her moan
tasting her sweetness
in the moonlight

More than a friendship
and more than a makeout
something unique
something close to my heart

Just finished watching X-Men First Class. Not too bad of a movie. Not too bad at all.

Database Class

Been thinking of creating my own Database Class. Either PHP class or maybe a ColdFusion component... perhaps both.

I imagine it would be something simple, something that takes arguments of the query built as strings.

For CF, not sure how I would do a <,cfqueryparam>> on parameters send into the function, if the function accepts a string. So something to think about with that for sure.

Not sure what I'll do with said class file(s) but yeah you just never know what it will bring.

Friday, January 20, 2012

WWW Linux

Been working with my /var/www directory lately. Rather annoying how it wasn't working for me. Anytime I tried to upload a file it didn't want to do anything with it etc. Long story. So I ended up running the following commands:

$ mkdir ~/www
$ sudo mv /var/www /var/www-backup
$ sudo ln -s /home/user/www /var/www

Works like a charm!

Java Console - Input

Ah the fun times of inputting data from the command line in a Java program.

Java has come a long way in this respect. From starting with IO Streams to what they have now. Currently, there is a Console class in the java.io package. Here's a simple test I did capturing data the user enters:

import java.io.Console;
import java.io.IOException;

public class Test {

public Test() {

}

public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
String in = null;

Console c = System.console();
if (c == null) {
System.err.println("No console.");
System.exit(1);
}

while (!(in = c.readLine("> ")).equals(".quit")) {
// do something with the content you just captured
System.out.println(in);
}
}
}

That's a very simple program now isn't it? Just accepts whatever you enter and echos it back out to the screen. If you type in .quit it will quit the program.

So yep, just a simple program for capturing data in a Console application.

status

Spent way too much time last night attempting to setup a Linux Server at home. After five hours, I finally figured it out. Woot!

I Love You

So... I wrote a program that would help cheer me up whenever I feel down. Yes I wanted my computer to tell me how wonderful I am and that it loves me.

You'd do it to... if you wanted to. Yeah all of that... because of reasons and other things.

Quite simple actually, all I did was check for keywords that I passed in... if it matched a "bad" keyword, I would output something like "Don't say that, you're wonderful!"

If it happened upon a "good" keyword, it would say "I Love You."

Just something simple. I want to try some kind of text game where it takes input as text, and does things... just moving from screen to screen on a map would be amusing. "Go left, go right, go forward, go backward" etc. Just something to toy and play with for sure.

Site Updated... Merged Two Sites Into One

Merged two websites into one tonight. Figured why log into two places when one will do.

So yep this is the new improved site. Hopefully all I'll be doing is adding to it from here on out. We'll have to see what happens.

Speaking of moving things around. Tonight I formatted an old computer I have, put Linux Mint on it and created my own home server. Not too bad if I do say so myself.

Can't recall all of the processor specs and all of that, but it has 2 gigs of ram and a 320 gig hard drive in it. So no I don't think I'll be running out of storage space anytime soon.

Kinda enjoy having my own server in the house. Good for projects or whatever else I need/want to put on it.

Not to mention it'll be nice to actually have something that's up 24/7 instead of only when the laptop is on.

CFTextarea Railo

Surprise Surprise... I was working on a site and would you know it? cftextarea isn't supported in Railo.

Either I have to come up with some other way to use the cftextarea... or just tell peoples that the app isn't supported on Railo. That kinda sucks for ONE tag to bring down a whole site as not useable.

I suppose I could ditch CFs built in JavaScript error checking and use jQuery... or something else.

Something to think about for sure.

For now at least... yeah need to figure it out.

Well I'm awake, alert, and up. I suppose that means something.

status

I keep telling myself that I need to go to bed... and yet here I sit. Doesn't make any sense to me. Why doesn't anything make sense??? Man I wish I could just get out of this funk I'm in.

Weekend Is Over

I suppose that since the weekend is over... that should mean something. Not sure what that means. I swear it gets more confusing as time continues. Yes all of that.

status

I suppose sleep would be good right now. Not sure what exactly it would bring me though. I should figure that out.

Just Live

Find a way to live
there's got to be something
if not nothing out there

Living life makes sense
if you know what you need
perhaps what you want

If it's nothing
you're just there
nothing to wait for

Life moves on
no matter what you try
it continues no matter what

Stressed

Just a tad stressed out tonight. I have got to figure things out. Just getting behind on things... doesn't make sense how I'm getting behind... doesn't make sense at all. One would think it would make better sense and would work out easier the way it should.

Nope not a clue. How do people do this? Wish I knew... wish I knew. But no I sure as heck don't know how it's meant to work out. Feeling so lost right now.

Have to figure this one out. Need to figure this one out.

No clue how it's all meant to be. I just don't know.

I'm sure this will make no sense to anyone. That's fine. I hear that life isn't meant to make any sense... it's just there. Or here. Who knows what it is anymore. I sure don't. Wish I did. That would be nice. Oh well... I'm sure I'll figure something out eventually.

Contact Manager

Been working on a Contact Manager. It's almost done... well the main part is almost done. I'm sure I'll figure more to add to it. There are still a few things I need to implement. Adding / modifying users comes to mind. But yes, there's more I can do with the project for sure.

Come to think of it, I should comment my code more. Sure there are some comments and all, but if someone wanted to modify it... yeah not sure how helpful the comments would be.

status

Oh how life is easy... that's what you'd want to believe.

Spam Spam Spam

Oh Spam. Honestly where do you even come from? So annoying. So crazy.

Not even sure why you are around. I guess you're there to annoy people and whatnot. Yeah all of that. So no. I do not like you spam. You are evil and will never understand what it's like not to be spam.

So yes, you may go now.

Refreshing The Window Opener

So here's a simple problem I had earlier this week while working on a personal project.

I had a webpage in an iframe that spanwed a window. The new window would either add a record to the database or update an existing record. The page that opened the window would then reflect the updated data.

Well for a while I tried various different things. Then I finally came upon the correct way to do it:

window.opener.location.reload(true);

So after I do my updates or additions, I run that code and it refreshes the data list and shows the new information.

Easy. As. Pie.

Regrets

Why live in regret
when you have the opportunity to change

Why wallow in self pitty
when there can be so much more to do

Why is a strong word
go out and do

Life&#39;s Music

The music makes my head bop
it's of no importance
yet I feel good

Making my way through life
my head bops
just like I'm having fun

Getting it all done
understanding nothing
simply living life

Using like in a cfqueryparam

So there I was... attempting to figure out the best way to to a like clause in a query statement using the cfqueryparam tag.

I had it coded like this:

like <cfparam cfsqltype="cf_sql_varchar" value="#arguments.search_criteria#">

Well that didn't work. So I did some googling. After a little bit of searching, I finally found out how it should be coded.

like <cfparam cfsqltype="cf_sql_varchar" value="%#arguments.search_criteria#%">

After laughing at how simple that was... I used it. Worked like a charm.

MySQL DateTime

Been attempting to put a datetime variable into a MySQL Database via ColdFusion. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong.

At first I tried:

#createODBCDateTime(now())#

For some reason that was only giving me the date and not the time.

Then I tried splitting up the date and time into two different fields, one for the date and the other for the time. Then I tried this code:

#createODBCDate(now())#

#createODBCTime(now())#

That gave me the date, but still not the time. Well I did some searching and then found there's a built in function in MySQL to do this. Why not.

Talk about simple:

NOW()

Well guess what, it worked just like a charm.

Honestly, sometimes I think morning just comes way too early.

Oh amusing morning, when will you ever learn about whatever it is you're supposed to learn about? Yeah that, and other things. Mostly that.

Stress and Life

There's an interesting thing about life that not a lot of people worry about. Stress. They say there's good stress and bad stress. Yeah that.

Sometimes the bad stress takes its hold on you... leaving you helpless. Well you feel helpless, doesn't make any sense at times. One would think it would eventually make sense.

I wish it would make sense. Wish there was a simple way to just slow down and take a breath. But that's where the issues come into play. There isn't always the time to take a breath. Taking a breath can make you think and stress even more.

I hate that feeling... trapped Ya can't move, there's nowhere to run.

Yeah... got to stop thinking tonight for sure.

status

Thinking about overwhelming things right now. Not any fun.

status

Finally heading to lunch. I wonder what it is I'll actually get... something yummy for sure. Perhaps something on the spicy side? Maybe. Possibly something Mexican, or a sandwich. Oh yes a sandwich would taste good about now too.

status

Thinking about lunch right now... oh how lunch would be good.

status

Honestly? I don't think some people actually understand anything... wow. What a crazy world we live in.

status

So wanting to go to bed right now. Oh how nice that would be But well there's a couch... hmmm might just have to take the couch.

Penguin Speaks

To Be a penguin, one must realize how much of a penguin they are. Not everyone understands what it is to be a penguin... others just must simply be.

Monday Is Over

Well there went another Monday... it's now over. Can't complain at all regarding that. Kinda glad the day is over. Of course when the day ends that means that the night only begins.

So what does that mean about it all? Eh not much, it's just life... pretty much it.

As all Monday's do... it's the start of a new week. New weeks mean that the old week is no longer around... sure memories are there and all, but well that's the end of that.

So this week... we'll see how it all goes.

status

Watching tv... Storage Wars to be exact. Good times... good times for sure.

status

Thinking about dinner... oh how dinner would be good right about now.

Ah Weekend

The weekend was good to me. At least I think it was good to me. Can't complain regarding it. It was just a weekend. Got to relax and just sit back and do nothing. Yes that's what I did indeed.

Tomorrow starts a new workweek. Good times to be had for sure. So glad that for all of the things that I have in life. Not the material things, but more along the lines of security etc.

To recap what I did... watched a movie, watched some TV. Worked on some WordPress template stuff... and yep just did nothing. But I already said that now didn't I?

Yeah well... that's it.

Multidimensional Arrays

Ah Multidimensional Arrays. Nothing too crazy in JavaScript. Just a little bit of this and that.

So typical arrays are fun and easy. You create them like so:

var colors = new Array();
colors[0] = "Red";
colors[1] = "Yellow";
colors[2] = "Blue";

Well that's fine and dandy, but what if you want to associate something with each of those? For example, what if you wanted to create a menu? You'll need at minimum a link name and a target. We could do something like this:

var colors = new Array();
colors[0] = new Array();
colors[0][0] = "red.htm";
colors[0][1] = "Red";

colors[1] = new Array();
colors[1][0] = "yellow.htm";
colors[1][1] = "Yellow";

colors[2] = new Array();
colors[2][0] = "blue.htm";
colors[2][1] = "Blue";

function createColors() {
document.write('<ul id="colors">');
for (var i = 0; i < colors.length; i++) {
var link = colors[i][0];
var title = colors[i][1];
var link_title = '<li><a href="' + link + '">' + title + "</a></li>";
document.write(link_title);
}
document.write("</ul>");
}

Then we would call it like this:

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
createColors();
//-->
</script>

Of course you could add more things, like an id, a title... whatever else you would need.

CSS Menu

Here's a fun little css stylesheet that one can use for menus.

The CSS for the menu is:

#menu {
padding:0px;
width:120px;
}

#menu a {
text-decoration:none;
color:#000;
display:block;
border:1px solid #fff;
padding-left:3px;
}

#menu a:hover {
border:1px solid #000;
}

Which you can use with the following html:

<ul id="menu">
<li><a href="#">Link One</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Link Two</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Link Three</a></li>
</ul>

This will producde a simple menu that when hovered over will display a black box around the menu item.

Of course you can change the background color, or the font etc. to whatever you need it to be. Ah the simplicity that is CSS.

Star Trek: Nemesis

Watching this little gem of a movie today... surround sound of course.

Upon viewing it... the whole idea of having a clone of Picard really is a good idea for a story. Of course I would have loved for them to take it a little differently.

Something along the lines of having the clone be the age of Picard. They could have done some really good stuff there. Half the movie could have been following the clone around the Enterprise etc. and then we find out it's a clone.

Yep something like that for sure.

But it's still a great flick. I enjoy it.

The For Loop

There are two types of for loops in Java. Your traditional loop:

for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) {

}

Or the advanced loop that will loop through items in say an array:

for (String s : stringArray) {

}

Let's go through both of these examples and see what comes of it.

First, let's create a String Array for the loops to process.

String[] strArray = {"one", "two", "three"};

Simple enough. Just an array containing three values of one, two and three.

With the traditional for loop, you would loop through the array like this:

for (int i = 0; i < strArray.length; i++) {
System.out.println(strArray[i]);
}

As you might have guessed, it outputs the three values:

One
Two
Three

Now, let's do the same thing, but using the other for loop. Sometimes this loop is called a For Each loop.

for (String s : strArray) {
System.out.println(s);
}

Again we get the three values:

One
Two
Three

I prefer the new method myself. It comes in handy. But there are times that you'll want to use the traditional for loop, (for example if you want to run through a Multidensional Array).

Happy Coding!

Friday

Friday decided to come. Can't complain about that at all. Looking forward to just relaxing at home during the weekend and all of that fun stuff. Oh yes good times indeed.

You'd think I'd be able to get away from the computer during the weekend. Well no. That's not always the case. I usually tend to program and just have fun. Hobbies are always a good thing, programming happens to be mine. So that's what I do.

I should come up with some ideas this weekend for projects and other things to work on. That would be neat. Of course writing a story would also be well accepted. Yes story writing is a must.

That's what I'll do, start a new story. See where it goes.

Projects Page

Created a Projects page. You can access it through here.

Nothing too special, so far only one project exists on it. The XML project that I talked about earlier.

If it's useful to people great. If not that's okay as well. Just something I felt like working on.

Java XML Documents

So I was looking into creating XML documents. Of course you could use the default that comes with Java or you could use JDom. I've used both methods in the past, and they both work quite well.

Got me thinking though, why not approach the creation of an xml document as a StringBuffer? Could be useful if you don't need to have a DOM to work with. Something simple to just output the xml document in a very simple text format.

I'm currently working on it. Possibly more just a proof of concept.

We'll see how it all turns out.

Recovering Old Projects

I was looking through some old folders the other night and stumbled upon a bunch of code that looked like they were starts to projects that never came to anything.

It was interesting to see the different kinds of ideas I had going, and then for some reason or another just stopped.

I'm wondering if any of these are projects that I should pick back up or not. Should be an interesting journey. Well not to mention it would be nice to clear out the junk and clutter that doesn't need to be there anymore.

So yep something to do for sure.

Looked over my HTML project. I should revive that one for sure and at least post the existing source code that I have. That'll be my next step.

Daily Grind

At work doing work stuff
shuffling papers
and the like

Waiting for lunch
and then time to go
more than a paycheck I know

Staring at the ceiling
thinking of life
listening to things
that don't make sense

It's worth something
that's for sure
what it is
somedays haven't a clue

A Place To Live

A place to live
a place to find
a place to call my own

Something in the distance
far far away
where only my mind can go

Needing something
to call my own
someplace to rest in peace

If only for a moment
to feel that gift
of quiet in soft release

Writing

Doesn't feel like I have time to do anything anymore. Especially writing stories.

Need to find a way to figure that out... how to just dive in and start writing things, stories... poetry... whatever I can write. Lots an lots of writing.

Ideas are not always easy to come by of course. So I'll have to do some thinking on those as well.

I suppose I'll just see what happens. Get some ideas together and just see what rolls off the tip of my pencil.

Dreamland

Laying my head on the pillow
I begin to dream

Something of this and something of that
nothing makes sense to my awake mind

So my sleeping mind
it will make all the things make sense

A play, a film, music plays
whatever my mind thinks up, it's there

Life unknown, stories untold
the truth and mystery remain

So to dream I say goodnight
may it be interesting

Previous Life

There I sat on the beach
watching as the waves crashed against the rocks
a peaceful day for sure

Sea otters doing their dance
on the ocean they would play
silly otters

Whales swimming around
doing their whale thing
living the dream

In a past life
I was me
yet I wasn't me

I enjoyed it all
and lived my dream
something different for sure

Now I am a different person
trapped in this new life
waiting or something

Or maybe waiting for someone
someone with the answers
to the life that I once lived

Tired

Sleepy time is here
night time wants me
my pillow beckons me
and my bed awaits
too late for dreaming
tomorrow will be here soon
so sleep I  must find
and sleep I has needs

Just Live

Don't worry about the past
if you've learned from it

Don't worry about the far future
the close future will probably change it

Don't worry about the small stuff
when there are bigger fish to fry

Simply live your life
until the day you die

Oh Life

Second day of January. Talk about good times. Didn't have to work today, tomorrow work starts all over for the New Year.

Sometimes all ya have to do is smile at life. Once you can do that and laugh at yourself? Life will be a good ride. Of course it's not always easy, but shoot if you believe in yourself, the sky is the limit!

Living Life

A day off
time to reflect
living this life
no regrets
understanding everything
believing nothing
knowing even less
enjoying it all

Remember

Remember the simple times
the easy times of life
recall to your mind when things are rough
those fun times will return
so sit back and watch
as the coaster of life takes shape
carefully guide yourself through it
just don't let misery take flight
those joyful times will be back
they'll return to you again
ya have to go through the hard times
to grow and become strong

Had Life Been Different

Oh life, had you been different
you wouldn't be the same
the lessons learned
the tears fought through
all would be forgotten
knowing nothing
and learning nothing
how silly you'd become
I prefer the lessons
I love the heartache
I need the loneliness at times
dear life you mean so much to me
you're not an easy road
I'll give you that
but you're a road for sure

One Program Multiple Platforms

They've been doing it in regular desktop apps for years. Why not do the same for web apps?

Here's what I'm thinking. Create a project and code it in the main languages that people use for websites.

Honestly, would it be that difficult? I don't understand why people don't do this. Aside from the fact that they don't know more than one language maybe?

So let's say you have a blogging platform. Why not code it for PHP, ColdFusion, JSP, Perl etc.? (Lets not bring ASP into the mix... but I suppose to be fair we should.)

So yep, that is my question for the morning. Why not do that?

It makes sense to me... of course it might be the high quantity of caffeine in my system at the moment. But that's besides the point.

If you were to code your project in the different web programming languages... made sure that they all looked the same. Just ran differently under the hood. Shoot. I'm loving this idea!

So Far So Good

Well, day one of the new year... not too bad. Nothing truly eventful occurred. It was just life as usual. Of course I hadn't planned on anything really great happening. It is just life afterall.

Probably time to take the Christmas tree down. Yeah... however the cats to appear to enjoy it. Will have to think that one through for sure. Silly kitties, having their fun and all of that.

Speaking of the cats, I'm amazed at how well they get along with the dog. Such good animals they all are.

Tomorrow is the second day. We'll see how that goes.

Bed Time.

Free

Ah to be free
as a bird on the clouds
a fish in the ocean

To let it all go
without a care in the world
to live and breathe as I wish

Instead I shackle myself
binding myself here in these thoughts
this life, these memories

Someday I'll learn
I'll figure it all out
and be free... I'll understand what that is

Falling

They call it falling in love
I wonder what that means
doesn't make sense some days
especially how it feels

Missing that friend
from so long ago
falling was the easy part
I think it was so

In the end they left
never to speak to
or hear from again
such was life

Life continues
somehow
meaning
nothing
yet everything

Sex Day

Once spent the whole day in bed. Didn't do anything but have sex, cuddle, nap, and watch some tv.

Seriously it was one of the best days ever just to relax and cuddle and fuck. Didn't have to worry about any responsibilities.

Yep truly was a good day for sure.

Saying Goodbye

Ah that most difficult word to say
to someone who makes your day
goodbye, it hurts no matter the cost

A weird word
a final word
a word that has meaning

Something to reflect on
sure enough
but not to drown you

So goodbye to the old
and in with the new
its how life begins
and how life renews

2012 A Lazy Day

So 2012, you came like you wanted
with the drop of a ball
and some flare as you do

January 1st is my lazy day I've decided
still sitting in bed having fun
doing whatever I please

I hope 2012 will be something exciting
not like 2011 which was quite boring

So 2012, you better be good
don't be dinking around on me
and playing under mah hood

2012

Well 2012 came in last night.

Not exactly certain what I think about the new year yet. I'm sure it will be full of whatevers and everything else that has to do with whatevers.

Typical for a new year to do that to ya.

I'd like to say that there were lots of memorable moments in 2011... but well I'm not sure I can recall all of them. So I won't even attempt. Simply on the fact that I might miss a few.

So, here's to 2012! Let's hope it's a good year.

Ever feel like no one is listening?

 Ever have that feeling that no one is listening to you? Yeah, that feeling. It can be a strong feeling to have, a hurtful feeling also. The...
