I do not wish to give offense to any of my Christian colleagues who use the cross on the steeples of their cathedrals and at the altars of their chapels, who wear it on their vestments, and imprint it on their books and other literature. But for us, the cross is the symbol of the dying Christ, while our message is a declaration of the Living Christ. …
… The lives of our people must become the most meaningful expression of our faith and, in fact, therefore, the symbol of our worship.1
The LDS Church doesn’t believe in using the cross as a symbol. The cross is a representation of the Dying Christ where the LDS would rather focus on the Living Christ. You won’t find a cross in any of the churches, on steeples, or anything of the like.
Until now.
The LDS Church has put up a statue of Jesus carrying his cross in Temple Square. True it is a key component in Jesus’ life. He died on the cross for our sins. But believing in a resurrected living Christ is oh so much more important than a dying Christ.
Is this a hint of changes to come? Only time will tell.
